Suggest our next title...

The Food for Thought @ JCC-Olean is requesting title suggestions for the 2008-2009 academic year. Goals for this project are fourfold:

  1. To build a sense of belonging
  2. To encourage communication on sensitive issues
  3. To improve literacy generally
  4. To expose students to literature beyond the textbook

Do you have a favorite book that you think our student body and the Olean community would enjoy reading and discussing? Please click on the "comments" link below and enter your suggestions. Thanks for you help!

Food for Thought Events

Cattaraugus County Campus of JCC Announces New Reading Initiative
Author Rachel Jacobsohn to Launch
“Food for Thought at JCC-Olean”

What: The Community Reads Project of the Cattaraugus Campus Program Committee announces a new reading initiative, Food for Thought at JCC-Olean. Joining the “one book, one community” movement that has spread across the United States from Seattle where it originated, Food for Thought at JCC-Olean encourages the JCC and Olean communities to read The Book Thief by Markus Zusak.

The Book Thief: Liesel Meminger is living in Germany during Hitler’s rise to power when she takes to stealing books. By 1933, most Germans support Adolf Hitler, newly appointed Chancellor of Germany. Liesel’s Papa, Hans Hubermann, is among those few who silently oppose and resist Nazi rule. The Book Thief explores more than a few compelling themes: the results of Nazi dictatorship and domination, the consequences of individual moral responsibility, the power and uses of literacy, and the results of war. Pick up a free copy of The Book Thief at the Cattaraugus Campus Library of JCC.

A Special Invitation to JCC Staff: On Thursday, Oct. 18th at 6:30PM, Rachel Jacobsohn, author of The Reading Group Handbook, will conduct a training session open to the public: “How to Manage Book Clubs and Book Discussions.” Sponsored by Jamestown Community College, the Olean Public Library, and the Western New York Library Resources Council, this training is free and open to the public. Please call Pam Walker at the Cattaraugus Campus Bookstore to reserve your seat at the training - 376-7514.

JCC Staff members are also invited to have dinner on campus with Ms. Jacobsohn at 5PM, prior to Thursday’s session. Please RSVP to Mona Lewis by October 8th at monalewis@mail.sunyjcc.edu if you plan on joining Ms. Jacobsohn for dinner. Earlier that afternoon, Ms. Jacobsohn will facilitate a book discussion on The Book Thief and how to manage book discussions for JCC faculty.

Rachel Jacobsohn: Our presenter is a professional facilitator, speaker, and consultant. For more than 30 years, she has served as a book and film discussion group facilitator and has conducted facilitator training. She is founder of the Association of Book Group Readers and Leaders and consults with authors and publishers on promoting quality fiction. She has appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show, Fox News, and Good Morning America.

Where: “How to Manage Book Clubs and Book Discussions” will take place in the Magnano Reception Room adjacent to the Cutco Theater on the Cattaraugus County Campus of Jamestown Community College.

Why: Food for Thought at JCC-Olean will present a campus and public-wide book discussion of The Book Thief at the Olean campus of Jamestown Community College in March 2008. We hope JCC faculty and staff will help ensure the success of this spring event by participating in this special opportunity to work with Rachel Jacobsohn this fall. We hope, too, that members of the JCC community will discover ways to support or to participate directly in Food for Thought.

More: Many initiatives in support of the March Food for Thought event are now in the planning or drafting stages, such as: a blog; a contest for best essay, multi-media project, or poster on The Book Thief; voluntary reading partnerships; etc. We invite your input! If you have an idea, get in touch with: Mary Jermann, Larry Sorokes, Diane Winger, Mona Lewis, Judi Blair, Tracee Howell, or Mary Grace Collier-Kisler.
